After winning fans with his portrayal of gang leader Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders, Cillian Murphy is set to reprise his role in a film adaptation coming to Netflix. The streaming giant announced the exciting news on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday night, sharing a photo of the script.

“This is one for the fans,” said Murphy, who will also be involved as a co-producer for the film. The popular BBC drama, which aired for six series from 2013 to 2022, depicted the lives of Birmingham gangsters in the early 20th century, with Murphy leading the show throughout its run.

“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me,” commented Murphy on his return to the role for the film. Fans have eagerly welcomed the announcement, expressing their anticipation for more of Tommy Shelby’s action on Netflix.

The series, which first premiered on BBC Two in September 2013 before moving to BBC One for the fifth series, garnered over five million viewers. Peaky Blinders has received numerous accolades, including National Television Awards and a Bafta for best drama series in 2018.

Writer and creator Steven Knight assured that the film will deliver an “explosive chapter” in the Peaky Blinders story, promising a no holds barred approach. Director Tom Harper, reflecting on the show’s success over the years, expressed his excitement at reuniting with the cast and crew for the movie.

Murphy, known for his roles in 28 Days Later and Oppenheimer, where he portrayed the father of the atomic bomb, recently won an Academy Award for his performance. His success at the Oscars solidified his position as a Hollywood heavyweight and the first Irish-born star to win best actor.

The Peaky Blinders film is expected to begin production later this year, offering fans a thrilling continuation of the beloved series on the big screen.
