Train cleared in time: Fire in the ICE paralyzes the station at Cologne/Bonn Airport

A burning control cabinet in an ICE triggers a large-scale operation by the fire brigade in the evening. The fire is soon under control, but the train station at Cologne/Bonn Airport remains closed for hours.

The train station at Cologne/Bonn Airport was closed on Thursday evening due to a fire in an ICE. According to the Cologne fire brigade, a control cabinet in the door area of ??the rear part of the train caught fire. “The fire then spread in the train compartment. At that time, the ICE was already on the platform in the airport station,” said the fire department.

A fire department spokesman said the smoke spread very quickly. “The train was cleared in time.” One person reportedly suffered from mild smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital.

The fire department was alerted around 7 p.m. Firefighters had the fire under control around 7:45 p.m. and then extinguished it. The station remained closed for hours, also because it still had to be cleared of smoke. Flight operations were not affected in any way, said a spokesman for the airport on request. The train station is in the immediate vicinity of the airport. According to the Cologne fire brigade, around 60 people and 20 vehicles were deployed, including the airport fire brigade and the federal police.
