WATCH: Jon Stewart likens Trump to media’s ex-boyfriend

Jon Stewart compared President Donald Trump to an elusive ex-boyfriend the media keeps pining after during his latest pop-in to Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show.”

Colbert had been talking about Sean Spicer, White House press secretary, banning The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, CNN, Politico and BuzzFeed from a recent press briefing.

“And the root of all this conflict is that Donald Trump calls any story he doesn’t like fake news,” Colbert said. With that, Stewart popped up from under Colbert’s host desk to wring his hands. He explained that he had dug a tunnel from his Middletown farm to the “Late Show” studio just for the occasion.

“Jon, you miss it don’t you?” Colbert, 52, asked to the former “Daily Show” host, who plans to open an animal sanctuary with his wife in Colts Neck.

“Yes, I miss it!” he said. “I spend the whole day yelling about Trump to the animals.”

Stewart, who visited “The Late Show” last month dressed in a long, Trumpian red tie (and an animal on his head) to deliver Trump executive orders from the future, went on to take a seat alongside Colbert to play through some of Trump’s debunked assertions. For example, the president’s claim that he had “the biggest Electoral College win since Ronald Reagan,” his erroneous belief that the murder rate in the United States is “the highest it’s been in 47 years” and the bizarre yet characteristically hyperbolic statement “I am the least anti-Semitic person that you’ve ever seen in your entire life.”

“He constantly says the phrase ‘believe me,'” Stewart points out, before cueing up a package of clips of Trump saying just that. “Nobody says ‘believe me’ unless they are lying.” (“What? No! It’s just a giant wooden horse. Believe me.”)

Stewart, 54, then took some time to send a message to the media.

So I heard Donald Trump broke up with you. Stinks a little, doesn’t it? Finally thought you’d met your match. The blabbermouth who’s as thin-skinned and narcissistic as you are. Well now it’s over. Well, good riddance, I say! Kick him to the curb. It is time for you to get your groove back, media. Because let’s face facts, you kind of let yourself go a little bit for these past few years. Put on a few pundits, obsessing 24 hours a day, seven days a week about this one guy. ‘What’s Donnie up to? Did he say anything about us? Do you think he’s gonna come on our show? Do you think he even likes us?! He doesn’t even have to come on, he can just call us! Oh, Donnie, please, just let us know you’re OK!’

Stewart said the media’s “breakup” with Trump creates an opportunity for “self-reflection and improvement.”

“Self-improvement,” he continued. “Take up a hobby — I recommend journalism.”
