A league of men to promote the equality of women in science

at the moment the list has 17 names, but they expect that in the future they will be many more. Five rectors of Spanish universities, nine directors or presidents of prestigious research centers, two university professors and a former minister is already part of the baptized as the League of scientists male Men For Women in Science, driven by L’oréal Spain.

The initiative, presented this morning in Madrid, already exists in France and is born in our country with the goal that men may actively collaborate to ensure that the scientific environment is egalitarian and the researchers have the same opportunities for access to grants, contracts, or positions of responsibility that their colleagues.

So, the 17 members of this league have adopted a charter of commitments that sets out a series of recommendations and actions to promote the presence of women, as well as to recognize and reward excellence. A document that, as highlighted Bernat Soria, former minister of Health and director of department at the Andalusian Center for Molecular Biology of Seville, “contains concrete actions necessary” to build an egalitarian society. The current one, he added, “is a society designed by men”.

cancer, diabetes and multiple sclerosis are the areas in which investigate the five Spanish scientific award-winning this year with Research Awards of the program L’oréal-Unesco ‘For Women in Science’, that aims to encourage scientific vocations among girls and to give visibility to the work of the researchers. This is the 18th edition of these awards, endowed with € 15,000 each.

Ana Ortega Molina, of the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), investigates the follicular lymphoma; Ruth Rodriguez Barrueco, IDIBELL/University of Barcelona, is focused on the development of therapeutic targets against breast cancer; Biola M. Javierre Martinez, of the Research Institute against Leukaemia, Josep Carreras (IJC), to combat the childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia; Alicia González Martín, Autonomous University of Madrid, investigating autoimmune diseases while Meritxell Rovira Clusellas, the Center of Regenerative Medicine in Barcelona (CMRB), try to find new treatments for diabetes.
