Dear graduates of 2024,

Congratulations on reaching this milestone in your life. As someone who recently graduated from college, I understand the mix of emotions you may be feeling at this moment. The excitement of what lies ahead is coupled with the uncertainty of the future. However, amidst this anticipation, we were reminded of the prevailing outdated views on women’s roles, particularly female graduates.

A commencement speech delivered by Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker at Benedictine College sparked controversy as he suggested that women should prioritize motherhood over professional ambitions. As a professional in the industry, I have been fortunate to work alongside inspiring female leaders who exemplify strength, capability, and determination. This firsthand experience has given me a unique perspective on the importance of impactful responses in shaping narratives, such as the one presented by Butker.

While Butker’s speech initiated a necessary dialogue on the power of choice and agency in shaping our future, it was the responses from various individuals and brands that truly made a lasting impact. Voices like Hoda Kotb, Maren Morris, and Whoopi Goldberg, as well as members of the Kansas City Chiefs organization, including Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes, all shared their perspectives on the matter. Brands like The Skimm, through founders Danielle Weisberg and Carly Zakin, also added to the conversation by emphasizing the need to challenge societal norms and make decisions based on individual values and aspirations.

These diverse responses have fueled a growing momentum around the discussion of choice and non-conformity, demonstrating that speaking out can have a more profound impact than the original speech. By addressing harmful stereotypes and encouraging meaningful discourse, we not only challenge outdated norms but also build trust and loyalty among audiences who support these principles.

In my role in PR, I have had the privilege of working with female leaders and entrepreneurs who have shown me the importance of compassion, fearlessness, and disruptive thinking. Their success, like that of many other women in leadership positions, serves as a testament to the limitless potential that women possess in both their professional and personal lives.

To the class of 2024, I urge you to embrace your journey, question the status quo, and remember that you are capable of achieving greatness, whether you choose to pursue a career, start a family, or do both. Let the stories of those who have turned adversity into inspiration guide you as you embark on this new chapter of your life.

With hope and determination,
Lizzie
