Foam in the product test: All lie well on two mattresses

Last but not least, the right underlay decides whether a person sleeps well. And there’s no shortage of good mattresses on offer, including foam ones. On some even large, small, heavy and light people are equally good, as Warentest determines.

If you believe studies, a third of the population in this country sleeps at best mediocre or even poorly. There are many reasons for this, such as too much media consumption, inner turmoil, back pain and other ailments. Apart from that, the following still applies: how you make your bed is how you lie down. A basic requirement for good sleep is the right mattress. It can be made of foam, for example.

Reason enough for Stiftung Warentest to start looking for the best foam mattress again. The testers examined ten cold foam mattresses measuring 90 by 200 centimeters. At prices between 185 and 520 euros. No mattress was rated worse than “satisfactory” – half of the products were able to convince with “good”.

Mattress suppliers like to advertise that their mattresses have different zones so that, for example, the shoulder can sink deeper than the pelvis when lying on your side. And according to the product test, this actually makes sense. Because the spine should be as horizontal as possible when lying on the side to avoid tension. On the other hand, the mattress must not give way too much when lying on your back, so that the pelvis does not sag. The current study shows that tall and heavy people seldom find a base that masters this challenge. Even in the current test, small, light people feel good on almost all models.

But there is another way. Because everyone lies well on two mattresses, whether large, small, heavy or light. The “Breckle Weida Pro Body S 592” for 370 euros (“good”, grade 2.0) and the “Badenia Irisette Büsum” (350 euros, “good”, grade 2.2) have the best lying properties. All body types lie well on them in a supine or lateral position. This was achieved with clear and well thought-out zoning of the mattresses. However, zoning alone is no guarantee for good lying properties. In the current test, this applies to the Ikea model “Åkrehamn” (satisfactory, 2.6, 189 euros).

Apart from that, tall and heavy people who like to sleep on their backs, as well as small, light people, are comfortable on the inexpensive “Sun Garden ComfortPur P1440” (179 euros, “good”, grade 2.2).
