Light in time of dark

Today the journalists live in the most violent of the story. Why do we kill? Why threaten us? Why do we imprison? Why do we want silence? From 2006 to 2018, nearly 1,100 journalists have been killed, according to UNESCO. The world is living a dark hour. The society lacks tools to understand, without understanding there are no alternatives and the desire for a better future is diluted. The fate of nations is not decided by the citizens, even in democratic States, but interest supraeconómicos of power groups that seem to live in another dimension: a world of privilege, cynicism and impunity that they want to stay secret.

These interests generate wars, corruption, mafia, migrations, human rights violations, sexual exploitation, social injustice, addiction to excess and destruction of natural resources. The journalism faithful to the truth, independent and rigorous, it is essential to understand this reality. The purpose of journalism, today more than ever, is to put a name and face to those that concentrated that power, no matter what their names, their race or religion, whether they are presidents, or government officials or businessmen or politicians or leaders religisos or heads of a cartel of drug. To the journalists, it behooves us to discover what they do, why they do, how they do it and what factors help them to do so with total impunity. Journalism has roads, called shortcuts, that neither the organs of justice have access. It is our duty to be custodians of the truth and supervisors of the power. Without truth and accountability there is no democracy or equity. Mexico has been the country where more journalists have been killed in the past 12 years, even more than in Syria or Afghanistan. Today it is the nation without armed conflict most dangerous in the world to practice journalism. I dedicate this award to the 120 mexican journalists killed in the past 12 years;14 in 2018, the last of this month. They want us dead but we still walk.
