Network Leonardo, a community to encourage the exchange of ideas

Build relationships, create a space of encounter and encourage the exchange of ideas. That is the goal of the Network Leonardo, an initiative that brings together more than 300 researchers granted by the BBVA Foundation, between 2014 and 2018.

The Network has held this Wednesday, its first meeting in Madrid, bringing together scholars from all over Spain, as well as members of the commissions of expert that, in each call, evaluate the nominations.

The Scholarships Leonardo were born in 2014 to promote the advance of knowledge in Spain through the support of people of between 30 and 45 years old who are in an intermediate stage of their careers and have a lot of growth potential.

Since its inception, the initiative has undertaken projects of different areas. For example, have received financial support scientists whose aim is to detect the metastasis of melanoma, groups that investigate the relationship between climate change and the extinction of species, projects that want to make windows able to generate energy from sunlight or plans to prevent religious fundamentalism, among many others.

With more than 300 members, the network seeks to be a community that encourages contact between professionals. Will be centralised via the web www.redleonardo.es. This site, in addition, will allow to follow the trajectory of the awardees.

“The seamless access to other men and women are highly creative in the same segment of age is an opportunity to explore other perspectives, to broaden and enrich the curiosity,” said Francisco González, chairman of BBVA Foundation during the meeting.

At the meeting have been active members of the commissions assessment of the Scholarship on Leonardo, as Henar Miguélez, professor of Mechanical Engineering of the University Carlos III of Madrid; Pedro Álvarez de Miranda, academician of the RAE or Ester Turu, deputy director of news Corporation Onda Cero Radio.

Since its inception, we have granted a total of 308 scholarships to the value of 10.5 million euros. The program’s annual budget is 2.2 million euros and each scholarship is worth a maximum of 40,000 euros. The various calls they have received over 9,000 applications for any of the eleven areas of knowledge covered by the program: Basic Science; Biology; Science of the Environment and of the Earth; Biomedicine; Technologies of Information and Communication; Engineering and Architecture; Economics and Social Sciences; Communication and Information Sciences; Humanities; fine Arts and Digital Art; Music and Opera; and Literary and Theatre.

In the presentation, Francisco González stressed the importance of supporting today’s researchers and creators of culture because innovation is “the most powerful tool for addressing major challenges of individuals and collectives of our time”.
