TechnipFMC and Sulzer Collaborate on Subsea CO2 Pump Solutions for Petrobras

TechnipFMC plc, a prominent subsea equipment and services provider, has partnered with Sulzer Flow Equipment to develop innovative subsea carbon dioxide (CO2) pump solutions for Petrobras. The collaboration aims to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions in the energy sector, particularly for Petrobras’ High-Pressure Separation Technology (HISEP) project. Since 2017, TechnipFMC and Sulzer have been working together to create high-pressure centrifugal pumps tailored for the HISEP pilot project in Brazil’s pre-salt oil region. The technology promises significant improvements in energy efficiency and productivity for floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels, along with cost reductions and emission decreases.

The new CO2 pump technology by Sulzer and TechnipFMC allows for immediate separation and reinjection of CO2 gas at the seabed, 2000 meters below the water line. This innovation is expected to enhance the efficiency of FPSO operations and reduce the carbon footprint, leading to significant energy savings and freeing up valuable topside space. The collaboration highlights TechnipFMC’s leadership in subsea processing and technology innovation, showcasing a commitment to driving more efficient and profitable growth.

The HISEP project, to be deployed at the Mero 3 development in Brazil’s pre-salt oil region, involves a consortium of stakeholders including Petrobras, Shell, TotalEnergies, CNOOC Limited, CNPC, and Pré-Sal Petróleo S.A. The strategic importance of the HISEP technology at Mero 3 lies in its potential to enhance oil recovery and reduce environmental impact in one of the world’s largest oil reserves.

The success of the HISEP project may pave the way for broader applications of subsea CO2 separation and reinjection technologies, supporting the industry’s shift toward more sustainable practices. The long-term benefits include enhanced oil recovery, reduced operational costs, and a lower environmental impact. TechnipFMC and Sulzer’s collaboration signifies a significant advancement in energy technology, setting new standards in efficiency, sustainability, and innovation.

Overall, the deployment of the HISEP technology at Mero 3 highlights the strategic importance of cleaner, more efficient, and profitable energy production. As the industry continues to evolve, the innovations by TechnipFMC and Sulzer will play a crucial role in driving sustainable growth.
