The institute of Real City, where there is even a gram of food to the garbage

Heike Freire: “The axis of all subjects must be the environment”

The teenage students of the institute Antonio Calvín of Almagro (Ciudad Real), are you going to put a fridge in the square, next to the corral of comedies, for the neighbors to fill it with the leftovers of the meal and take advantage of those in need. Also want to pick up in the supermarket foods that are about to expire and distribute them among the families which do not reach the end of the month.

This center of public education has launched a campaign against the wastage of food that has put Kevin, Julian and Jose Alejandro, students 16 and 17 years of FP Basic, to prepare a business plan: have mounted a delivery company solidario of food and have been called Helpers Food; the support of the city Council, the Red Cross, the Church and the Food Bank and in a few months will begin to work in earnest.

the institute works to stop the excessive consumption and to raise awareness about the ethical reasons, economic, and environmental to take advantage of everything that is purchased. In the AntonioCalvín, a bilingual school with 490 students and 53 teachers, the food will no longer strip. Before the students were left many times to the half of the sandwich from the playground, but now they eat it whole or keep it for dinner.

“These kids were so brutal. The parents were a few snacks too big, and many times thrown in the trash without eating them whole. They bought bags of goodies all day and didn’t appreciate what they had, because they live in a culture in which you give the button and everything works and looking at all the immediacy,” explains Contreras, the teacher who has become a modest project of a classroom into a model of collaborative work.

The method helps them to develop critical thinking, because it seeks to “convey to students and families a different way of looking at the environment”, and also to promote research and experimentation through the use of ICT and mobile learning; to work the empathy, the creativity, the values and, of course, the environmental awareness, the circular economy and entrepreneurship.

through the thread of the blog post overload Syndrome, the kids have gone to a nursing home to talk with the grandparents about how they ate them when they were young; they have flooded the municipality of stickers with the slogan Reaprovéchalo; have contacted organizations such as I do Not Waste or We Save, Eat, and have held conferences with La cuina a Sils, a collective that prepares culinary recipes with the leftovers.

“The project has a great impact on the center and also in the town,” emphasizes the director of the institute, Miguel Cecilio Gomez, who is of those who bet on “open subjects” the company “are not watertight compartments”.

“What’s most important is that the kids see sense to what they do, participate in something that is connected with the reality”, abundant Inma Contreras. The idea has been so successful that they have been adding more teachers from other localities. There is a Syndrome of Abundance in the other two schools in Almagro, Tenerife, Malaga, Pamplona, Almeria, Pontevedra, Madrid, Sevilla, Alicante and Mallorca.

“we waste food because we are too exquisite, becomes self-critical student Carmen. To his side, her friend Laura recognizes that, although not like the fish, has started to eat him whole. “Now I keep them for the dinner left over from the playground,” adds Angela. “We are No more than four kids at FP, but we have learned that by doing things together, we can help a few families,” says Kevin.
