The United States were still officially neutral. The good personal relationship of Churchill and Roosevelt, however, had brought the plight of the British a lot of American support. At the end of their meeting, the two men proclaimed the principles of “the Atlantic Charter”. For the time after the victory over “the Nazi tyranny” they took the establishment of a new world organization in the eye. After the First world war, established the League of Nations had proven itself to be quite obvious.

The name “United Nations”, as the us, the organization is known today, for the first time in a document from 1. January 1942 – in the meantime, the United States had entered the war mentioned. The Declaration was signed by representatives of the United States, great Britain, the Soviet Union and China. On the following day, a further 22 States followed suit. The 26 signatories committed themselves to the fight against the axis powers of Germany, Italy and Japan to continue and to conclude no separate peace. As a Whole, they act from now on under the name “United Nations”. Among the signatories of occupied countries such as Czechoslovakia, Belgium, the Netherlands or Denmark, but also Australia and the other British Dominions, as well as countries in Central America such as Costa Rica and El Salvador, among others.

The UN from 51 founding members to lead on

the founding of The United Nations (UN) was driven in the further course of the war ahead. In 1945, representatives of 46 countries gathered in San Francisco to the UN-drawing Charter. The ceremony took place on 26. June. A prerequisite for an invitation to the founding conference was that the States concerned, Germany and Japan had declared war and the principles of the Declaration of 1942 that are accepted. The invitation request, led in the last months of the war declarations of war, the military no longer was, of course, a matter of concern. The 46 in San Francisco represented States invited four more to participate. In addition to the newly liberated Denmark and Argentina, these were the Soviet republics of Belarus (white Russia) and Ukraine.

the Latter was a result of Soviet demands. Stalin argued that these two Soviet republics had suffered through the German occupation so that you have a seat in the UN in this area. Thus, the Soviet Union was the only UN member three votes and not, like all the others, only one. The UN on lead 51 founding members. As the number 51, Poland is led. At the time of the signing of the Charter in June 1945, there were in Warsaw still no recognized government. The Soviet Union had already installed their Governor. But in London, the government-in-exile, which had been in place during the war, as the legitimate representative of the occupied country remained still. It was not until the Polish parties had ultimately agreed to the expense of London – on a common government, was a Polish representative on the 15. October, the Charter signing, at 24. October entered into force.

Franklin D. Roosevelt, the “inventor” of the UN, it was hoped that – in the reason, contrary to all historical experience – through the founding of the organization in a post-war world in which all conflicts would be resolved peacefully. Zynischere contemporaries, to which you will also include Roosevelt’s allies, Stalin and Churchill, put, rather, to the usual power-politics in the framework of the new Organisation will continue to lead.

security Council as a design error

in Retrospect, both schools of thought have achieved in a certain way, their goals. The cynics are taking advantage of to date, the construction of the most important UN body, the security Council. If it comes to conflict and elemental power interests are affected, each of the great powers the ability to prevent a binding decision with their Veto. And an error like the Soviet Union in 1950, as their representative was absent during the crucial vote on Intervention by the United Nations in the Korean war, has made up to today, no big power for a second Time.
