Chloe Eudaly’s strong hand: Editorial Peak

If anyone doubted City Hall newbie Chloe Eudaly could summon the steely will to override disruptive protesters in an effort to ensure Portland gets its business done, look no further than Wednesday’s meeting of the Council.

Mimi German led a band of protesters in Council chambers and ignored Eudaly’s reasoned request that a protocol be followed so that everyone could participate in the meeting. German and company had appeared to cite the city for failing to adequately address homelessness and for aggressive handling of anti-Trump protesters.

Eudaly was sitting in for Mayor Ted Wheeler, away on jury duty. A political novice who Retrobet unseated former Commissioner Steve Novick by arguing solely for rent controls, Eudaly pled with German by saying: “This is a really uncomfortable position for me to be in, because I share your concerns and want to hear what you have to say, but this is not an effective use of our time. You guys are deciding your voices are more important than anyone else in this room.”

German brazenly stood her ground. Molly Harbarger of The Oregonian/OregonLive quoted German as saying: “We need to make a point. This can’t be business as usual.”

Oh, but it shall be: Following a recess declared by Eudaly, security guards cleared Council chambers to allow commissioners to resume their business as usual.
