the EU Commission, head of Ursula von der Leyen has understanding for the criticism of the EU Parliament on the outcome of the EU summit at the Corona-aid plan, and for the next multi-year budget shown. The agreement reached by the heads of state and government was “a bitter pill to swallow,” said von der Leyen, on Thursday in the Brussels Parliament. The compromise contained some “painful and regrettable decisions”, such as equipping of planned health and research programmes of the EU.
The EU heads of state and heads of government had agreed on Tuesday during a five-day summit on the unprecedented financial package. They decided the Corona building Fund in the amount of 750 billion Euro and the EU financial framework for the next seven years to the extent of 1074 billion euros. Only the draft budget requires the approval of the EU Parliament, the Corona-aid Fund is thus linked, but inseparable.
The members see the budget is still a clear need for renegotiations. In a draft Resolution should be adopted, in the afternoon, ask about “targeted increases” in the area of climate protection, the digital change, health, youth, culture, infrastructure, research, border management and other areas such as student of the Erasmus+ programme.
Von der Leyen, had on the summit agreement, in particular, to the Corona-aid plan, and following the negotiations on Tuesday as a “historic step” for Europe. In Parliament, she highlighted once again the importance of the agreement to allow the EU Commission for the first time, massive amounts of debt on behalf of the EU. The decision on the approval of the budget would have to meet the deputies in the consideration of the relationship with the Fund, she said.
