Exploring the Trend of ‘Baby Botox’ with a Dermatologist

news-24092024-092656

The trend of “Baby Botox” is gaining popularity on social media. Instead of waiting until older age to use Botox to fix wrinkles, people are now opting for smaller amounts of neuromodulator injections at a younger age to prevent wrinkles from forming in the first place. Dr. Alix J. Charles, a dermatologist in Illinois, refers to this trend as “prejuvenation” or preventative Botox, emphasizing the importance of preventing lines and creases from appearing in the future.

According to data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there has been a 9% increase in neuromodulator injections for all age groups from 2022 to 2023, with a growing number of younger individuals under 30 opting for the procedure. While Botox is most commonly used for individuals aged 40 to 54, Dr. Charles has noticed a shift in his practice towards treating patients in their 20s.

Although the FDA does not recommend cosmetic Botox for those under 18, Dr. Charles reassures that Botox is a safe product with low risk when used on healthy individuals by an expert injector. However, he cautions that regular, long-term use of Botox is necessary to maintain the benefits of preventing lines and wrinkles caused by muscular contractions. Discontinuing Botox usage can lead to the loss of these benefits over time, as well as potentially weakening the facial muscles.

In addition to Botox injections, there are alternative treatments such as lasers and ultrasound devices that can help improve skin quality. Dr. Charles also recommends incorporating daily use of SPF 30 sunscreen, topical antioxidants, and vitamin A products into your skincare routine to maintain healthy and youthful-looking skin.

While the “Baby Botox” trend may be popular on social media, Dr. Charles advises individuals to consider their overall skincare needs and consult with a professional to explore all available options. It’s important to take a holistic approach to skincare and choose treatments that are best suited to your individual needs and goals.
