For Olivier Faure, Jean-Luc Mélenchon can no longer “be the one who embodies all of the left and ecology”

“I can no longer stand these controversies, these diversions which prevent the left from being heard. » The first secretary of the Socialist Party (PS) Olivier Faure estimated on Tuesday October 17 that the leader of La France insoumise (LFI), Jean-Luc Mélenchon, could “no longer claim to be the one who embodies the whole of the left and ecology”.

Mr. Faure specified on France Inter that he would propose to the national council of the PS on Tuesday evening “a moratorium” to “obtain a clarification” without which the socialists “will no longer participate in the Nupes intergroup” at the National Assembly, after the refusal of LFI executives to designate Hamas as a “terrorist” organization.

Ten days after the Hamas attack on Israel, “I’m furious,” assured the socialist leader: “For a week, what have we been talking about? We are talking exclusively about La France insoumise, which at one point refused to qualify Hamas as a terrorist organization, which is nevertheless obvious. »

“A subject with the Mélenchon method”

“There is today a subject with the Mélenchon method, because it effectively leads the left into a form of stagnation”, insisted Mr. Faure, criticizing “the strategy of conflicting everything”, “of permanently antagonizing », of the three-time presidential candidate.

Demanding a “more democratic functioning” of the alliance to achieve “a common candidacy for the 2027 presidential election”, he called for “a dialogue” with those who are “ready” to “build the gathering on the foundations clear” and “put an end to a strategy that leads us into a wall”.

“We asked for a Sixth Republic, it is not to have a new Jupiter, it is to have, on the contrary, the possibility of moving forward with a spirit which is a collective spirit,” he decided.

Created in June 2022 for the legislative elections, the New Ecological and Social Popular Union (Nupes) allowed the left to have 150 deputies in the National Assembly, but has also experienced multiple crises.
