Mahershala Ali Credits ‘House Of Cards’ For Helping Him Get Oscar Win For ‘Moonlight’

Mahershala Ali won the Oscar on Sunday for best supporting actor for his role as a Miami drug dealer named Juan in “Moonlight,” and he credits his role as Remy Danton in “House of Cards” for helping him achieve this.

“So to be a part of that and that being something that feels really authentic for our culture and a real option in how we view and absorb and embrace content … that’s the reason I’ve been able to put certain things together and even have this moment because of the — the four years I spent on ‘House of Cards,’” he said, according to the Washington Post.

Sadly for “House of Cards” fans, Ali won’t be back as Remy in Season 5.   He already talked about his exit from the show several months back, but he reiterated it during the Oscar red carpet.

“All due respect to ‘House of Cards.’ They created an opening for me to be able to do this work and move forward,” he told Extra. “I also wouldn’t be able to be here if I stayed on the show, so it was just time to move on. I just wanted to be more fulfilled as an actor.”

Most of the major players will still be back. Kevin Spacey will be reprising his role as President Frank Underwood, Robin Wright as First Lady Claire Underwood, Michael Kelly as Doug Stamper, Paul Sparks as Thomas Yates and Neve Campbell as political consultant LeAnn Harvey.

There will be new players in the series as well, with Oscar nominee Patricia Clarkson and Campbell Scott booking “major roles” next season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. While details of their roles are still being kept a secret for now, it has already been confirmed that they will both be featured heavily in the new season.

“House of Cards” Season 5 will premiere on Netflix on May 30.
