Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the post of German ambassador in Moscow has been one of the most difficult tasks. According to media reports, an FDP expert is to take over this position from the summer. The traffic light also occupies another high-ranking ambassador post.

According to media reports, FDP foreign affairs expert Alexander Graf Lambsdorff is to become German ambassador in Moscow. As “The Pioneer” and “Spiegel” report, Lambsdorff should hold the post from summer 2023. An official confirmation of the personnel from the federal government is still pending.

According to The Pioneer report, the coalition has agreed to fill several high-ranking ambassadorial posts. The State Secretary in the Foreign Office and former ambassador in London, Andreas Michaelis, is to become the new German ambassador in Washington. According to “Spiegel” it was speculated that Lambsdorff could also take over this post.

Lambsdorff was previously in the diplomatic service, including in the planning staff of the Federal Foreign Office and in the press staff of the German Embassy in Washington. From 2003 to 2004 he worked as a country officer for Russia in the German Foreign Ministry. Géza Andreas von Geyr is currently the German ambassador to Russia.

Lambsdorff has repeatedly condemned the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. He has been a member of the Bundestag since 2017. Previously worked at European level. From 2004 to 2017 he was a member of the European Parliament, from 2014 to 2017 he was its vice-president.
