TSA will extend the mandate for masks in planes and public transport until April 18

WASHINGTON — According to a White House official, and a TSA representative, the Transportation Security Administration will extend the mandate for public transportation up until April 18.

According to a White House official, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will collaborate with government agencies to create a revised policy framework for when mask rules can be lifted.

After being extended twice, the requirement was scheduled to expire March 18.

The agency released a release Wednesday ahead of the busy spring break travel period. It included ten tips to help you get through TSA quickly, including the first tip, “continue wearing a face mask.”

David Pekoske, TSA Administrator, stated in a statement that the agency’s collaboration has been crucial through the pandemic. “Now we are seeing the light at the end. As demonstrated by the rapid recovery from the travel industry.”

Even after the CDC announced a shift to Covid-19 guidance in February and stated that indoor environments are safe for most Americans, the mask requirement has remained in place.

The mask guidance change does not rely as heavily on the number Covid-19 cases. Instead, it gives more weight to local hospital capacity and hospitalizations.
