The global lacrosse community recently gathered for the 2024 World Lacrosse General Assembly in England, with delegates from 92 National Federations, including England, in attendance. The assembly showcased progress in the sport’s journey, including key by-law amendments to further Olympic evolution, new leadership introductions, and strategic outlooks approved to shape the future of international lacrosse up to 2028.
Progress Towards LA28: Green Light for Multi-Nation Members
At the assembly, World Lacrosse members approved a significant by-law amendment introducing the term “Multi-Nation Member” (MNM). This designation recognizes organizations like Great Britain, where athletes from multiple nations compete together under IOC eligibility rules, allowing MNMs to participate in sanctioned World Lacrosse events. This structure reflects the collaborative spirit driving forward the return to the Olympic stage at LA28, aiming for podium success for Team GB across England, Scotland, and Wales.
Leadership for the Future
Bob DeMarco (USA) was elected as the new President of World Lacrosse, succeeding Sue Redfern. Redfern, who led the organization through growth, development, and IOC recognition, established key commissions and oversaw numerous World Championships during her tenure. DeMarco’s presidency begins in 2025, as the sport prepares for its Olympic return, following his significant contributions to global membership growth and lacrosse associations.
International Event Review
The General Assembly reviewed the calendar of World Lacrosse international events up to 2032, adjusting the Men’s U20 Championship to 2029 and aligning it with the Women’s U20 Championship on a four-year cycle. Delegates also approved equal team caps for men and women at the first WL Sixes Championships in 2027, with continental qualifiers and qualification processes for the LA28 Games. Minor constitution and by-law amendments were approved, alongside the 2025-28 Strategic Plan and World Lacrosse Budget presented by CEO Jim Scherr.
