Former Arsenal youth player Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, 33, has had his contract terminated by Scottish Championship side Greenock Morton due to his arrest on charges related to drug smuggling. Emmanuel-Thomas was accused of importing £600,000 worth of cannabis into the UK from Bangkok.

He was arrested at his home in Gourock, near Glasgow, and taken to Carlisle for questioning. Law enforcement found 60kg of cannabis hidden in suitcases that arrived at Stansted Airport from Bangkok. Emmanuel-Thomas denied any involvement in the drug smuggling operation, but his contract was terminated by Greenock Morton shortly after his arrest.

The National Crime Agency led the investigation, which resulted in the discovery of cannabis spread across four suitcases. Two women, aged 28 and 32, were also arrested in connection with the smuggling operation. One of the women is Emmanuel-Thomas’ partner, and they had flown business class from Bangkok to the UK via Dubai. Both women were charged with drug importation offences.

Despite maintaining his innocence, Emmanuel-Thomas was remanded in custody after his bail application was rejected. His lawyer emphasized his client’s good character and lack of previous convictions, highlighting his long-standing career as a professional footballer.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas joined Arsenal at the age of eight and spent 13 years with the club, winning the FA Youth Cup and the Premier Academy League in 2008/09. He made five appearances for Arsenal’s first team before moving on loan to other clubs. After leaving Arsenal in 2011, he played for Ipswich Town, Bristol City, Queens Park Rangers, PTT Rayong in Thailand, and Jamshedpur FC in India.

Emmanuel-Thomas signed a short-term deal with Greenock Morton in July 2024, but his career and life have now been affected by the drug smuggling allegations. It’s a stark fall from grace for the former Gunner who had promising beginnings in his football career.
