"As soon as possible": Angelique Kerber wants the thrill back

Three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber is about to give birth to her first child – but is already planning her return to the tennis tour. That should happen “as soon as possible”, because the mother-to-be is missing a lot.

With all the great anticipation of her first child, Angelique Kerber is already thinking about her return to the tennis court. She is very happy and excited about everything that lies ahead of her with and after the birth of her baby. “But I love my sport, the routine on the tour, the thrill and the emotions of the matches,” said Kerber in an interview with the German Press Agency. “I already miss that. That’s why I want to come back,” said the three-time Grand Slam tournament winner with a view to her planned comeback.

“I still have goals and I want to feel those emotions back on the pitch.” Kerber is expecting her first child in the spring and has therefore not played a match since Wimbledon. Shortly before the US Open, she made her pregnancy public. Many had therefore expected the former number one in the world to end their career. But Kerber definitely wants to make her comeback and has made the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris one of her goals.

It is not yet clear when exactly she will be back on the tennis tour. “It’s clear to me that I’ll only return to the tour when I’m fit and feel ready. That’s why I don’t put myself under pressure by defining a date,” said Kerber. However, the break should not be extremely long. “But it’s also clear that I want to get back to work as soon as possible,” said Kerber.

Kerber played her last match on the professional tour in Wimbledon in June – and announced her pregnancy in August: “I really wanted to play the US Open, but in the end I decided that two against one is just not fair competition,” she wrote Twitter.
