Black day for Leicester: Liverpool win without scoring a goal

Liverpool FC ended 2022 with a win. In the home game against Leicester City, however, coach Jürgen Klopp’s team does not have to sink the ball into the opponent’s goal to get the three points. Because Leicester defender Wout Faes undermined two own goals.

Team manager Jürgen Klopp is still on the rise in the Premier League with top English football club Liverpool FC. Still without World Cup discovery Cody Gakpo, whose transfer from PSV Eindhoven cannot officially be completed until New Year’s Day, the Reds celebrated a 2-1 (2-1) win against Leicester City at home on Anfield Road on Friday evening.

However, the way it came about was extremely strange: After Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall fell behind in the fourth minute, 24-year-old Belgian Wout Faes, who had only been with Leicester since September, probably experienced some of the worst minutes of his football career. The central defender scored an own goal in the 38th minute – and another in the 45th. He stood there with outstretched arms and couldn’t believe it himself.

According to data provider Opta, Faes is only the fourth player in the Premier League to have scored two own goals in a game. In any case, Liverpool was happy about their fourth league win in a row. The Reds remain sixth in the table, but have reduced the gap to Manchester United to one point for the time being. With 17 points, Leicester have to orient themselves more and more downwards.

Meanwhile, national defender Thilo Kehrer followed West Ham United’s 0-2 (0-2) defeat at FC Brentford on the substitutes’ bench. Ivan Toney (18′) and Josh Dasilva (43′) scored for the West London visitors. The Hammers could fall back to a relegation zone with 14 points in the further course of the 18th game day.
