Canadian grabs World Cup ski-cross crown | Toronto Star

Canadian Marielle Thompson clinched the World Cup ski-cross crown Saturday with her sixth win of the season in Miass, Russia. With six wins and a second-place finish this season, Thompson has an unbeatable 155-point lead in the Crystal Globe standings heading into next week’s World Cup finals at Blue Mountain in Collingwood, Ont.

MEN’S DOWNHILL: Home favourite Kjetil Jansrud took a giant step toward wrapping up the World Cup downhill title with a win Saturday in Kvitfjell, Norway — where Canadians Manuel Osborne-Paradis and Erik Guay just missed the podium. Jansrud beat his closest rival for the season crown, defending champion Peter Fill of Italy, by eight-hundredths of a second Saturday to extend his lead to 33 points with one race remaining. Beat Feuz of Switzerland was third, followed by Osborne-Paradis. Guay, a double medalist at the recent world championships, wound up sixth.

WOMEN’S SUPER-G: Suddenly the overall title is no lock for Mikaela Shiffrin, after Ilka Stuhec won Saturday’s World Cup super-giant slalom — in which ski star Lindsay Vonn crashed. She later pulled out of Sunday’s combined event. Stuhec, the world downhill champion, cut into Shiffrin’s lead for the second straight day, with nine races left in the season.

CURLING: Canada’s Kristen Streifel defeated South Korea’s Min Ji Kim 6-3 for third place at the world junior curling championship in Gangneung, South Korea. Earlier, Streifel and her Edmonton-based team dropped a 13-2 decision to Scotland’s Sophie Jackson in the semifinal. Sweden’s Isabella Wranaa defeated Scotland 10-7 for the championship.
