Time of kick-off: 3:00 PM BST

Chelsea XI: Mendy. Chalobah. Thiago. Rudiger. Azpilicueta. Loftus-Cheek. Kovacic. Chilwell. Hudson-Odoi. Werner. Lukaku.

Southampton XI: McCarthy Livramento and Bednarek. Salisu. Walker-Peters. Romeu. Ward-Prowse. Redmond. Walcott. Tella. Armstrong.

Chelsea beat Southampton 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Nine minutes into the match, the Blues scored when Ben Chilwell’s corner kick from the right flank was flicked backwards to Ruben LoftusCheek. Trevoh Chalobah was found on the far side and he scored with an aerial header.

Although the west Londoners believed they had doubled their lead, Antonio Rudiger made a spectacular run from defense and placed Romelu Lukaku in the area where Alex McCarthy beat him. However, the linesman flag was raised for offside.

Chelsea scored another goal shortly after Callum Hudson Odoi’s left-footed cross found Timo Werner at the far post. He netted a stunning header, but VAR declared Cesar Azpilicueta had fouled Kyle Walker Peters.

Southampton came back stronger in second half. James Ward-Prowse equalised with Southampton on 61 minutes. This was after Chilwell fouled Tino Livramento late and recklessly.

After 77 minutes, Ward-Prowse was no longer a hero but a villain when he was sent off after a late tackle against Jorginho.

Chelsea used the numbers game to regain the lead with Werner after the 84th minute.

Ross Barkley passed the ball down the right flank, where Azpilicueta immediately turned the ball to the middle. Azpilicueta beat McCarthy with a calm final.

After 89 minutes, the west Londoners won with the most bizarre goal of the season. Chilwell had already compensated for the penalty.

Mason Mount made a low cross on the right flank, finding Lukaku. McCarthy was rattled by his shot.

Azpilicueta won the rebound, but the ball hit the bar again before it reached Chilwell.

The full-back shot a shot at Southampton’s goalkeeper, but the goal line technology determined that the ball was too high.

WARD HAS IT

James Ward-Prowse, Southampton’s captain, reached two milestones against Chelsea.

Ward-Prowse was temporarily equalized from the penalty spot by Saints, but was then sent off to challenge Jorginho.

After beating Edouard Mendy at 11 yards, the midfielder proved to have a great ability to score set-pieces.

The England international shares a similar record now with Peter Crouch and Sadio Mane as well as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
