Olympique de Marseille separates from its coach, Gennaro Gattuso

The defeat of Olympique de Marseille (OM) in Brest (0-1) on Sunday was fatal to its coach, Gennaro Gattuso. The Marseille club announced the departure of the Transalpine on Tuesday, February 20, in a press release, however welcoming the “unfailing investment and great professionalism” of Mr. Gattuso and his staff.

Arriving at the end of September 2023 after the unexpected resignation – after five matches – of his predecessor, the Spaniard Marcelino, Gennaro Gattuso suffered from the results of his team, which only managed to win once in 2024, against the amateurs of Thionville (National 3) in the thirty-second final of the Coupe de France.

Since then, OM have had two defeats and three draws in Ligue 1, as well as an elimination on penalties in the round of 32 of the Coupe de France, against Rennes. The Marseille team is currently in 9th place in the league standings, far from the podium, the objective stated at the start of the season by its president, Pablo Longoria.

“How do you win? »

Last week, OM conceded a draw (2-2) against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League, after conceding a goal in the last minute. After this European meeting, experienced as “a defeat”, Gennaro Gattuso recognized his powerlessness. “You say to yourself: ‘How can I win?’, but all season we’ve had this kind of problem, it’s been like that since I arrived. How we resolve them, I don’t know, I’m having trouble,” he admitted.

If his management then assured him of maintaining their confidence, the signal sent by the 2006 world champion was that of a man short of solutions. Sunday, after the lost match in Brest, he again felt that his team had “hit rock bottom” and he said he was “disappointed in himself”.
