Russian Cargo Ship Sinks in Mediterranean Sea Due to Engine Room Explosion
An engine room explosion has caused the sinking of the Russian cargo ship, Ursa Major, in the Mediterranean Sea between Spain and Algeria. The vessel, constructed in 2009, was under the control of Oboronlogistika, a company affiliated with the Russian defence ministry’s military construction operations. The ship was reportedly on its way to the Russian far-eastern port of Vladivostok, carrying two massive port cranes on its deck.
Crew Members Missing
According to the Russian foreign ministry, 14 out of the 16 crew members have been rescued and brought to Spain, while two crew members are still missing. The cause of the explosion has not been determined, and the Russian embassy in Spain is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Unverified Video Footage
Unverified video footage captured by a passing ship on 23 December shows the Ursa Major heavily listing to its starboard side, with its bow significantly lower in the water than usual. The distress signal from the ship was received by Spain’s maritime rescue service when it was approximately 57 miles off the coast of Almería. The crew reported bad weather conditions and the ship listing to the starboard side.
Specialized Cargo
The ship, previously known as Sparta III, was carrying specialized port cranes intended for installation in Vladivostok, along with parts for new ice-breakers. The vessel departed from St Petersburg on 11 December and was last seen sending a signal between Algeria and Spain before the tragic incident occurred.
The sinking of the Ursa Major raises concerns about maritime safety and the risks faced by crew members on cargo vessels. Our thoughts are with the families of the missing crew members as they wait for news of their loved ones. The unpredictable nature of such accidents serves as a somber reminder of the dangers inherent in seafaring journeys.
As we await further details on the investigation into the engine room explosion, let us take a moment to appreciate the bravery and resilience of all seafarers who navigate the world’s oceans, often encountering perilous situations beyond their control. The maritime industry plays a vital role in global trade and transportation, and incidents like the sinking of the Ursa Major underscore the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of those who work at sea.
Let us keep the crew members of the Ursa Major in our thoughts and hope for a swift resolution to this tragic event.
