Stuart Byrne Column: Golden Stueys – My Team of the Year Picks

news-02112024-032104

It’s time for the Golden Stueys, my annual ‘Team of the Year’ selection from the Premier Division. This season has been full of changes, with Shelbourne and St Pat’s catching up to Derry City and Shamrock Rovers. Some might say I’m biased as a Shelbourne fan, but I have no regrets about including six Shels players in my team. Even though Shels led from the start to the end of the season, they haven’t received the credit they deserve. Derry City was expected to challenge Shamrock Rovers this year, but Shels took the lead and held on, even managing a European schedule. They have exceeded expectations and dominate my Golden Stueys.

Starting with the goalkeeper, Conor Kearns from Shelbourne has been outstanding throughout the season. His clean sheets, crucial saves, and excellent distribution have kept Shels in the top spot. Moving on to defenders, Sean Gannon from Shelbourne has been consistent and solid in his performances. Paddy Barrett, also from Shelbourne, has shown great maturity and has been a key player in turning defense into attack. Lee Grace from Shamrock Rovers may not have played every game, but when he did, he showed class and stood out. Ben Doherty from Derry City has been a standout player, initiating attacks and making a difference for his team.

In the midfield, Will Jarvis from Shelbourne has been exceptional on the right wing, making a significant impact in the first half of the season. JJ Lunney from Shelbourne has been the best midfielder in the league, showcasing great ball retention and composure. Dylan Watts from Shamrock Rovers has come into the spotlight with Jack Byrne’s absence, proving to be a class act. Mark Coyle from Shelbourne, with his consistency and crucial goals, earns a spot in the midfield. Michael Duffy from Derry City has been outstanding on the left side, contributing with goals and hard work.

As for the striker position, Padraig Amond from Waterford is the lone forward in my team. Despite not being a standout year for strikers, Amond’s consistency, experience, and leadership have been crucial for Waterford’s success.

Overall, these players have showcased their talent and dedication throughout the season, earning them a spot in my Team of the Year. Each player has contributed significantly to their team’s success and deserves recognition for their hard work and performance on the field.
