Royal London, the UK’s largest mutual pensions, protection, and investment provider, has recently announced the winners of its Championing Women and Girls’ Rugby Award. This initiative, in partnership with The British & Irish Lions, aims to recognize outstanding efforts by grassroots rugby clubs in promoting women’s rugby across the four unions. The selected clubs will each receive a trophy and a £10,000 grant to further develop their women and girls’ rugby programs.

Among the deserving recipients is Guisborough RUFC from England, which has rapidly grown its women and girls’ section over the past two years. The club’s emphasis on education, respect, and community values has made it a central part of the local community, fostering a safe and inclusive environment for women to engage in rugby. Similarly, Cooke RFC in Ireland offers a comprehensive pathway for women and girls of all ages and abilities, with a strong focus on female participation and leadership at all levels within the club.

In Scotland, East Kilbride RFC has experienced significant growth through its outreach, education, and social programs, with a particular emphasis on supporting female coaches and referees. This commitment to developing women’s rugby extends to Clwb Rygbi Caernarfon in Wales, which has built a robust club culture over the past 25 years. The club’s Môr Ladron female hub provides crucial support for girls in North Wales, offering a pathway for their development in the sport.

The grant scheme attracted over 120 applications, showcasing the growing interest and dedication to women’s rugby at the grassroots level. A panel of judges, including former England international Shaunagh Brown, representatives from Royal London and The British & Irish Lions, and a grant funding expert, meticulously evaluated the submissions through a two-stage process. The chosen clubs will have the opportunity to host visits from Royal London and the Lions throughout the season to witness firsthand the positive impact of the funding.

Susie Logan, Group Chief Marketing Officer at Royal London, emphasized the importance of nurturing women’s rugby at the foundational level to advance the sport as a whole. By highlighting and supporting these exemplary clubs, Royal London aims to inspire other organizations to invest in women and girls’ rugby programs. The partnership with The British & Irish Lions underscores the commitment to promoting inclusivity and equality in rugby, paving the way for future generations of female athletes to excel in the sport.
