Slovenia mourns the loss of young cross-country skier, skateboarder and roller skater Hana Mazi Jamnik. The athlete died in an accident in Norway at the age of 19, the Slovenian news agency STA reported. The National Ski Association opened a condolence book for Jamnik in the city of Ljubljana. This winter, the Nordic World Ski Championships will take place in Planica, Slovenia. It was to be the highlight of her young career. She would probably have started there for the first time as part of the senior national team.

The accident happened on Thursday in the Botshei tunnel between Forsand and Joerpeland. A truck collided in the tunnel with the athlete who was training there. Jamnik was taken to a hospital in Stavanger but could not be saved. Norway’s police are now investigating the truck driver. The Norwegian news agency NTB reported that the driver’s license was confiscated and he is accused of not being careful on the road. According to his defense attorney, the man has pleaded not guilty. He believes it was a tragic accident.

Jamnik had won gold and silver medals in the youth competition at the World Roller Skating Championships in Italy last year. She was also junior world champion in cross-country skiing in the skating technique and vice world champion in the classic technique. Her friend Anze Gros, himself a former cross-country skier, says an emotional farewell on Instagram: “We wanted to be together forever. I will miss your hugs and all the fun things we did together.”
