VfL 2022 without losing points: Wolfsburg dismantles Frankfurt in the top game

VfL Wolfsburg is still one win away from the perfect Bundesliga year 2022. In the penultimate game, the champions lead the previously unbeaten Eintracht from Frankfurt. The women from Lower Saxony extend their lead in the table with the clear success.

On their mission to defend their title, the VfL Wolfsburg footballers also shook off the second pursuer with a show of force. Captain Alexandra Popp’s team defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 5-0 (3-0) in the top Bundesliga game in front of 14,027 fans in the VW Arena. Jill Roord (5th/42nd/53rd) shone with a three-pack for the doubles winner, who impressively underlined his exceptional position. Goalscorer Ewa Pajor (44th) made things clear even before the break on her 26th birthday, ex-Wolfsburg player Sara Doorsoun (86th) scored an own goal.

Due to the ninth victory on the 9th day of the game, the leader (27 points) now has a whopping seven points ahead of the previously unbeaten SGE. The cushion is five points on second-placed FC Bayern, Frankfurt slipped to third place. The runner-up had won 4-0 (1-0) at TSG Hoffenheim the day before.

The sovereign leader seemed inspired – perhaps also motivated by the atmosphere. After a pass from Lena Lattwein, Roord from the Netherlands gave Frankfurt goalkeeper Stina Johannes no chance with a shot into the far corner in the 5th minute. Frankfurt was able to free itself a little, but did not come dangerously in front of the Wolfsburg goal. Coach Tommy Stroot’s team decided the game before the break: Roord first scored from a tight angle after Johannes made a mistake (43′), two minutes later Ewa Pajor headed in from a corner to make it 3-0 at the break.

Even after the change of sides, VfL dominated. After a pass from captain Alexandra Popp, 25-year-old Roord headed in again and made it 4-0 with her third goal (53rd minute). Doorsoun from Frankfurt made it 5-0 with an own goal five minutes before the end.

The encounter against Frankfurt was the second game in the stadium in which the VfL men usually play. On Matchday 5, 21,287 fans attended the game against the women of FC Bayern (2:1). The seven-time champion Wolfsburg, who can rise to become the sole Bundesliga record champion this season, is still without a point in the league in 2022. In the home game against newly promoted SV Meppen on December 11, the perfect year beckons.
