Women march through CL: Wolfsburg storms to win the group in a ten-goal spectacle

The women at VfL Wolfsburg leave no doubt: They want to be involved in the Champions League for a very long time. They make the group victory clear with a goal spectacle against the SKN St. Pölten. This will also please the absent coach Tommy Stroot, who is ill.

The footballers from VfL Wolfsburg shot their way to group victory in the Champions League with a thumping victory. In the final preliminary round game, the Wolves won 8:2 (3:0) at the Austrian champions SKN St. Pölten. The German Vice European Champions Lena Lattwein (5th), Marina Hegering (38th) and Svenja Huth (40th) made everything clear before the break.

After the break, striker Ewa Pajor (56′), Tabea Wassmuth (67′), Pauline Bremer (74′, 85′) and Pia-Sophie Wolter (78′) added the other goals, Mateja Zver (78′) and Rita Schumacher (85th) scored in a goal-rich final phase for the hosts. VfL, who this time had to do without Lena Oberdorf, who had a cold, and trainer Tommy Stroot, had already won the first leg by a clear 4:0. Pajor is the competition’s top scorer with seven goals and two assists.

This means that two German teams are in the CL quarter-finals, which will be drawn on January 20, 2023. Already on Wednesday, the women of FC Bayern made it into the round of the top eight with a 2-0 (0-0) win against Benfica Lisbon as runners-up in the group. A German duel in the quarterfinals is not out of the question.

The German champions crowned a very successful year with championship, cup victory and participation in the semi-finals of the Champions League – overall, the Lower Saxony conceded only one defeat during this time.
