Google News users were left in the dark on Friday afternoon as the popular news service experienced a widespread outage. Reports flooded in from around the globe, with users unable to access the latest updates.

The outage, which began around 1pm on May 31, affected both desktop and mobile apps. While Google’s main search engine remained operational, the “news” tab displayed an error message, leaving users unable to view any stories.

Frustrated social media users took to X, formerly Twitter, to express their inability to search for news articles. Both desktop and mobile users of the platform reported issues accessing news content.

The extent of the outage remains unclear, but reports from the UK, US, and other countries indicate that it could have impacted millions of users. Down Detector, a website monitoring service disruptions, recorded a significant increase in reports related to Google News.

As of 2.10pm on Friday, the service was still inaccessible to many users. Google has yet to provide a statement on the cause of the outage or when normal service is expected to resume.
