Graton applesauce recalled from Trader Joe’s

A Graton company is conducting a national recall of unsweetened applesauces from Trader Joe’s stores due to concerns about the possible presence of broken glass in the jars.

Manzana Products has recalled three versions of applesauces it produces for the grocery store chain, all packaged in 24-ounce glass jars.

“The recall was initiated after the company received customer reports of glass found in some of these products,” according to Manzana’s announcement, posted Saturday on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration website.

The Manzana announcement and a similar notice posted Sunday on the Trader Joe’s website said all the recalled products have been removed from store shelves and destroyed. Neither company said whether anyone had been injured by consuming the products.

Representatives for Manzana and Trader Joe’s were unavailable for comment Tuesday.

The recalled products are Trader Joe’s First Crush Unsweetened Gravenstein Apple Sauce, with a bar code of 00015905 and all best-before dates through Aug. 8, 2018; Trader Joe’s Organic Unsweetened Apple Sauce with a bar code of 00194877 and all best-before dates through Oct. 6, 2018; and Trader Joe’s All Natural Unsweetened Apple Sauce with a bar code of 00014359 and all best-before dates through Dec. 16, 2018.

The first-crush Gravenstein and organic varieties were sold nationally at Trader Joe’s. The all-natural variety is sold at the company’s stores in California and 12 other states.

“If you purchased any of these Unsweetened Apple Sauce products with the affected codes, please do not eat it,” the grocery company said in its notice. “We urge you to discard the product or return it to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund.”

Manzana has been in operation here about 95 years. In 2012, it was acquired by the Eclor beverage division of French agricultural cooperative Agrial Group SA.

The company produces applesauce, juice and apple cider vinegar and has found a niche in the organic market. Roughly 95 percent of the apples it processes are picked from organic orchards.
