The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled that the successive imprisonments and convictions of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny violated their rights and had political motivations.

The ECHR has examined the arrests of Navalny from march 2012 to February 2014. At least two of the arrests were designed to suppress political pluralism, according to the court.

In the past seven years, Navalny has been admitted to prison more than ten times. The opponent Russian had asked the 17 judges of the Court who recognize that the frequent arrests that suffers are for “political reasons.” Claims to be a victim of “unlawful arrests” and of “arbitrary detention”, a few facts already reported -without success – to the entities court of the Russian federation. Navalny is one of the critics most ferocious of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, and a charismatic crusader against corruption, but the national polls just have given him a 5% support among russians.

on Tuesday, the authorities prevented him from taking the plane in Moscow claiming that I should pay off the debts arising from a civil case for fraud and that amounted to something more than 30,000 euros. It was not the first time that the border was closed for him: between 2013 and 2017, Navalny could not travel abroad because the authorities did not handed over the passport because of several court cases against them. However, in may of last year, Navalny received a passport and was able to travel to Spain to be treated for a burn in one eye suffered during an attack in Moscow.

Navalny took advantage of this time to do campaign on social networks to criticize the prohibition to leave the country. In reality he was prevented from leaving due to a debt he owed to Kirovles, a timber company state in the center of a criminal case with politically charged and has been convicted two times. Finally, last Wednesday received authorization to leave the country, after they have paid. Navalny attended Thursday’s hearing in Strasbourg, and published a photo of him and his brother Oleg on Instagram.

Navalny could not participate in the presidential elections of the past month of march due to a court conviction, which calls it a “policy”. His confrontations with the Russian Government and its security forces have risque this year. The former bodyguard of president Putin and chief of the National Guard, Viktor Zolotov, challenged in September to a ‘duel’ to Navalny, after the investigation carried out by him on the corruption in this police force created by Putin. “I’m simply challenging you to a fight: a ring, a mat, any part where I promise that I will make a good filet of beef juicy with you,” said Zolotov before the camera dressed in a uniform of the military and sitting at your desk.

Navalny is not a problem for Putin, but the Russian elite. Their constant complaints have been placed in an uncomfortable situation, as well as prominent names of the regime. During the past year has proven that acting outside of the norms his labor opponent is more easy: summons demonstrations without a permit to work better, because the ability to be in the centre rises the influx, increases the attention of the media and the arrests always occur international visibility.

Russia has lost a series of important cases in Strasbourg and has had to pay a substantial settlement in dozens of cases politically embarrassing.
