A jury handed a 32-year prison term to Darnell Rogers for aggravated assault of a police officer after hearing testimony about his behavior in jail.

The charge stemmed from a shootout with deputy constables on Sept. 18, 2015, that began when he fired at one of the officers chasing him in the 3800 block of East Southcross Boulevard on the Southeast Side, according to testimony in the trial that began last week.

Rogers, 23, who was wounded in the gunbattle and is paralyzed from the waist down, acted as his own attorney Casinomaxi throughout the trial and questioned witnesses Thursday who said he got into fights while in Bexar County Jail awaiting trial.

The same jury acquitted Rogers on Wednesday of attempted capital murder of a police officer. But another trial is set for Monday on an aggravated assault charge in which Rogers has also asked to represent himself.
