Petaluma police arrest man in smash?and?grab jewelry burglary

Petaluma police early Monday arrested a local man suspected of busting a window of an eastside jewelry store with a rock and stealing items.

The burglary happened just before 4 a.m. in the 300 block of South McDowell Boulevard, according to police. Officers found a front window broken and witnesses told them they’d seen a person running from the area toward Maria Drive.

Officers found a man matching the burglar’s description who also had several items from the store and they arrested Justin Vandaveer, 35, of Petaluma on suspicion of burglary, possessing stolen property and violating his probation, police said. Details on what was taken from the store weren’t released.

Vandaveer was taken to the Sonoma County Jail. Bail was set at $10,000.
