A woman president for the first time in Mexico in 2024? A start of response is expected by September 6, after the power and opposition primaries which enter their decisive phase on Monday, with two favorite women.

“It’s transformation and it’s time for women,” former Mexico City mayor Claudia Sheinbaum told thousands of supporters gathered in the capital on the penultimate day of her campaign on Saturday.

Ms. Sheinbaum, 61, is the favorite with former Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard for the investiture of the Movement for National Regeneration (Morena, nationalist left) in power.

From this Monday, an opinion poll must decide between the two rivals – and four minor candidates – in the race for the succession of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. The result will be known on September 6.

Claudia Sheinbaum has called for “unity” against her rival who accuses her of having financed her pre-campaign with public funds.

“Everyone talks about unity, they just have to respect what we decided together,” quipped his rival Marcelo Ebrard.

“We are going to triumph,” he said on Sunday during his end-of-campaign rally in front of 10 to 15,000 people invited to an American-style show hosted by Dinamita Sonora, a very popular salsa orchestra in Latin America. .

The two potential dolphins are vying for the political legacy of President Lopez Obrador, whose popularity rate has reached 60%. Favorite of the next presidential election, his party is in the majority in Parliament, and is at the head of 23 of the 32 states of Mexico.

“It’s an honor to be with Lopez Obrador,” chanted Ms. Sheinbaum with the crowd on Saturday, defending the outgoing president’s record (“For the good of all, the poor first”, “our economy is strong, our finances are healthy”).

“I recognize the great work my friend Lopez Obrador has done. But we want to think about 2030,” said Ebrard for his part on Sunday, promising, for example, more security and “six million more jobs”.

For the nomination of the opposition candidate, the right-wing senator Xotchil Galvez is the favorite against another woman, Beatriz Paredes.

The Opposition Front will announce the result on September 3, after an opinion poll which has just begun and a popular “consultation” next Sunday.

Of indigenous Otomi origin, from a modest background, Xotchil Galvez received the support of a pillar of the PAN (liberal-conservative right), Santiago Creel.

Embodying the awakening of a weakened and divided opposition, this business leader has become the target of attacks by President Lopez Obrador since the emergence of his candidacy in June.

The presidential election is scheduled for June 2, 2024.
