Frankfurt/Kassel (dpa/lhe) – A supposed lover brought a 69-year-old woman almost 25,000 euros. Customs officials in Kassel found the cash in a package addressed to France at the end of October, as customs and police announced on Monday. According to previous investigations, it was presumably a love scam. The man contacted the 69-year-old from Lower Saxony via social media and in the course of the correspondence asked her for a payment of 25,000 euros because he was supposedly in trouble.

“In the so-called “love scam” or “romance scam”, fraudsters usually contact single people via the Internet and pretend they have romantic interests in order to trick their victims into making significant payments,” said Carina Orth, spokeswoman for the Frankfurt customs investigation office, according to the announcement .

Such attempts at fraud are not uncommon. According to this, another love scam was currently prevented when a 69-year-old woman from Rhineland-Palatinate wanted to send 18,000 euros by post to Italy, it said. Both women should get the money back.
