Dresden/Leipzig/Chemnitz (dpa/sn) – According to the police, thousands of people again took to the streets in Saxony against energy policy, cost increases and the Ukraine war. Reporters from the dpa reported on lively demonstrations in Chemnitz, Leipzig and Dresden. The police initially did not give exact numbers about the participants in the evening. However, the protests were largely quiet, according to a police spokesman in the evening. However, an exact evaluation is still pending.

According to media reports, around 1,500 people took to the streets in Dresden alone last Monday – the day of German unity. There were more than 3,000 in the neighboring counties. More than 5,000 people are said to have demonstrated in the two districts of Bautzen and Görlitz. The protests also extended to smaller towns in the Free State.

The protests against the measures to combat the corona pandemic, the current Russia-Ukraine conflict and the current inflation have recently gained ground, especially in eastern Germany. According to police estimates, more than 100,000 people demonstrated on the Day of German Unity at dozens of rallies in Thuringia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
