The risk of forest fires will be “very high” on Sunday in the Var, announced Friday Météo France which placed the department on red alert with the return of the wind. The Bouches-du-Rhône will be placed in orange, with a high risk of fire starting.

The wind at the start of the week had already placed firefighters on alert in the south-east of France, with multiple outbreaks of fires quickly brought under control and two significant fires.

The first in Haute-Corse, which had threatened three villages above L’Ile-Rousse, covered 200 hectares overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday. The other, in the hinterland of Nice, began Thursday towards Bairols (Alpes-Maritimes), in an area far from dwellings and very difficult to access.

“Despite a few swings or fumaroles in certain burned areas, the fire did not progress on Friday and the area covered is unchanged, i.e. 100 hectares”, specified the firefighters, supported in particular by a water bomber helicopter which made more than 190 airdrops since Thursday.
