Manuel Bandera (Málaga, 1960) left his hometown in 1982 to study Physical Education in Madrid. But his story begins shortly after starting university, when he entered the world of acting almost by chance. As soon as he tried the scenarios, he decided to take that path.
“In the summer of 1984, an opportunity arose to audition with Raúl Sender, who was going on tour with a magazine called Champagne. I joined that company and became a professional dancer until 1989, when Las cosas del querer was released. Those five years I was doing everything that was done on television: One, two, three, La bola de cristal… And also working with artists like Paloma San Basilio on tours. I was like that until Las cosas del querer arrived, which was something suddenly that it fell on me without trying or looking for it, and I already decided to dedicate my life to acting”, the actor told about his beginnings in this interview with EL MUNDO.
Las cosas del querer, a 1989 film directed by Jaime Chávarri, catapulted him to success. His interpretation of couplets together with Ángela Molina served to make Pedro Almodóvar pay attention to him to make him dance a tango in ¡Atame! (1990) and for the cast of Kika (1993).
The theater also forms a good part of Bandera’s career. Reinvented as a musical actor, he has participated in projects such as El Zorro, Cabaret, Chicago or more recently as the protagonist in A Chorus Line, a classic musical directed by Antonio Banderas.
Regarding the small screen, Manuel Bandera has appeared sporadically in series such as Amar en tiempos revueltos, Bandolera or Acacias 38. In addition, he demonstrated his skills as a dancer by proclaiming himself the winner of the seventh edition of the ¡Mira quien baila!
