Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – Four years after the last event, the team world championship of darts professionals is coming back to Frankfurt am Main. The successors to the two Scots Peter Wright and John Henderson will be sought in the ice rink for four days from Thursday (7 p.m. / DAZN). In 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 the tournament took place in the Main metropolis. At that time England (Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis) and the Netherlands (Michael van Gerwen, Raymond van Barneveld) won twice.
This time, none of these four stars will be there when 32 teams fight for the trophy and the equivalent of around 80,000 euros in prize money. Saarlander Gabriel Clemens and Martin Schindler from Strausberg/Brandenburg will be at the disc for Germany. On the first day of the World Cup, they will play their opening game against outsiders Spain.
“The World Cup was always awesome. The support was always great, it was always a lot of fun. In Frankfurt we made it to the quarter-finals twice,” Schindler told the German Press Agency before the tournament. World champion Wright, who is defending his title with Henderson, also sees the event with special eyes: “Playing for your country is a completely different kind of pressure.”
In round one, only doubles are played at first, from the second round there are also single duels. For Germany, at least reaching the final day on Sunday is mandatory. There it could go in a possible quarter-final against title favorites Wales with Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton. Germany’s best performance so far was the semi-finals in 2020. Clemens and Max Hopp played at that time.
