Jena (dpa/th) – The discovery of an unknown vessel in the Saale triggered a major fire brigade operation in Jena. A fisherman found a container with an oily liquid in the area of the paradise park on Wednesday evening from which gas was leaking, a city spokesman said in the evening. A specialist company from Nordhausen is expected to examine the find more closely. It is also possible that it is a remnant from the Second World War.
According to the city spokesman, a school where an event was taking place and an adjacent restaurant were cleared. A bridge and a path were also closed. There is currently no direct danger for visitors to the paradise park.
A spokesman for the state operations center confirmed the discovery of a container. Sampling is currently underway, further information could not yet be given.
