While the Nupes wanted to unite by presenting a common list in the European elections of 2024, the French Communist Party (PCF) has already planned to present its own list, reveals this Wednesday, June 21 France Info, according to a party information. According to our colleagues, Léon Deffontaines, the young spokesperson for the political party, has been appointed as the head of the party list. His enthronement will be voted on July 1 by the Communist National Council.

Little known to the general public, Léon Deffontaines, at 27, embodies the new blood of the party. He chained the mandate of leader of the Young Communists with the spokesperson of the PCF. The “leader” would therefore be about to embody the party in the next European elections.

By thus concretizing its emancipation from the Nupes for Europeans, the PCF joins the ecologists, who also wish to present their own list. The objective being, for the Communists, to obtain seats in Brussels. To regain the European Parliament, the party will therefore have to win more than 5% of the vote. A major issue for Fabien Roussel, who has been trying to distance himself from the left-wing coalition for several months.

A new blow to the hopes of La France insoumise, which for months had been increasing its efforts to consolidate the union of the left and find an agreement between the different formations of Nupes. At a time when the executive is trying to regain control of key positions, LFI was counting on a common list to weigh more in the French political landscape, with, as a horizon, the municipal elections and the presidential election of 2027.
