“The Power of the Dog”— The leading nomination with 12 Oscar nods including for Kirsten Dunst and Benedict Cumberbatch. Jane Campion was also nominated for best picture and best director. Cumberbatch, a Montana rancher who is rough-hewn, has a menacing arrogance and is told in a Gothic tale that’s brought to life on the Western plain.
“Don’t Look Up” Adam McKay’s apocalyptic comedy won four Oscar nominations including best picture and original score. Climate change comedy starring Leonardo DiCaprio stars Jennifer Lawrence. Earth is saved six months before a huge comet destroys it.
“tick… tick… BOOM!” Andrew Garfield was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal as Jonathan Larson. This adaptation of a autobiographical musical written by Larson was Lin-Manuel Miranda’s feature director debut. He also received a nomination for film editing.
“The Lost Daughter — Starring Olivia Colman (Jessie Buckley) and Dakota Johnson (Dakota Johnson). It received three Oscar nominations including nods to Colman and Buckley. A psychological drama based on the Elena Ferrante novel is made with Colman and Buckley playing the same roles as the young and old versions of Leda Caruso, a frustrated translator. They are set on vacation in Greece.
“The Mitchells and the Machines” – A road trip by the Mitchell family to drop off Katie (voiced Abbi Jacobson), for her first year at film school forces the oddball Mitchell family to stop an uprising of the world’s electronic gadgets. Two friendly robots are a blessing. Mike Rianda is the nominee for best animated feature. He directed “Gravity Falls.” It’s also available on Apple TV+ and Disney+.
HBO MAX
“Dune” — While it’s not streaming on HBO Max, it’s worth checking out for its return. Digital rentals and purchases are available on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, iTunes, and Google Play. This epic tale of desert sci-fi, based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 classic novel, received 10 Oscar nominations. It stars Zendaya and Timothee Chalamet. Denis Villeneuve directed.
“King Richard” — The story of Richard Williams, father, coach, and driving force behind the tennis greats Venus Williams and Serena Williams, is directed by Reinaldo MarcusGreen. Will Smith plays the lead role. Six Oscar nominations were received for the film, including one each for Smith and Aunjanue Elis, as well as best picture and original song, for “Be Alive” (DixSON and Beyonce Knowles Carter). This intimate and authorized look at the lives of the family as they rise from Compton in California to the top of tennis is a fascinating one. It is not available for streaming on HBO Max subscribers, but it may one day be. You can stream the film for a fee on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Redbox, Redbox, Redbox, YouTube, and Google Play are also available.
“Nightmare Alley”. — The Guillermo del Toro version of the 1947 neonoir classic won four Oscar nominations, including best picture or cinematography. Stars include Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett and Toni Collette. Willem Dafoe was also in the cast. Richard Jenkins, Rooney Mara (Ron Perlman), Mary Steenburgen, and David Strathairn were all nominated. This is the story of a charming hustler’s brief rise from low-level carney to high-paid showman. Hulu subscribers can also stream it.
“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”.— The story of the rise and fall of the televangelist power-coup Tammy Faye (and Jim Bakker) earned Chastain her third Oscar nomination. Two nominations were given to the film, including for makeup and hairstyling. This is notable because of Tammy’s brazen attitude. Andrew Garfield plays Bakker.

“Spencer Kristen Stewart’s unhinged princess Diana won her an Oscar nomination for best actress. This biopic is directed by Pablo Larrain. It takes a dark and surrealist approach. Although it received mixed reviews, some critics considered it to be a moving and artistic look at one the most well-known women in history. It was shot over the Christmas weekend with Prince Charles’ royal family.
“Flee” — This grand jury prize winner at Sundance, with the exception of live action archival footage is animated. This is the story of Amin (a pseudonym for a refugee child who Jonas Poher Rasmussen met in his small Danish town when he was 15). Amin never spoke about his childhood in Afghanistan, or the family he was born into. Amin took 20 years for him to open up to him.
“Summer of Soul (…Or When the Revolution Could not Be Televised (or, when the revolution could not be televised)” — The 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival was recognized by Ahmir “Questlove”, Thompson. He also received an Oscar nomination. The film was shot in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park), and features performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone. Also, Gladys Knight & the Pips as well as Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension, and many more.

“Belfast” — Based on Kenneth Branagh’s childhood, this black-and white film won seven Oscar nominations. It was based on Branagh’s childhood and featured Judi Dench as the leading actress. Ciaran Hinds was also nominated for supporting actor. Star Jamie Dornan received a notch in Absent. This film was shot in Britain the very first time after the lockdown of 2021. Dornan plays the role of a father in Belfast who struggles to protect his family during the Troubles. The streaming service is no longer available for subscribers, but it may be re-streamed. It is available at a charge on Amazon Prime, Apple TV+ and YouTube.
“Being The Ricardos” This behind-the scenes look at Lucille Ball’s marriage to Desi Arnaz was nominated for three acting awards: Javier Bardem played Desi and Nicole Kidman played Lucy. J.K. Simmons was a supporting role. Aaron Sorkin has given a sharp and loving dramatization to a difficult week in the making of “I Love Lucy” TV series.
“Coming 2 America”,— The sequel to Eddie Murphy’s hit got one Oscar nomination for hair and makeup. Craig Brewer’s comedy, which Murphy plays Prince Akeem and three other characters, has things looking up for Zamunda women post #MeToo. Yes, there are still patriarchy, and yes, royal bathers still obey. Starring Jermaine Fowler and Tracy Morgan. Also, Leslie Jones, KiKiLayne, Arsenio Hill, Tracy Morgan, and Leslie Jones.
ON APPLE TV+
“CODA” — Apple won its first best picture nomination for this drama. It also made history when supporting actor nominee Troy Kotsur was the only deaf actor to be nominated. Marlee Matlin, his “CODA” star, was the first. It also received nominations for best adapted screenplay. The film is about the Rossi family from Gloucester, Massachusetts. Ruby, a senior in high school, is the only hearing member of the Rossi family, and often their only link to the hearing world.
“The Tragic of Macbeth” Joel Coen directed. Denzel Washington stars as the gray-haired Macbeth, who knows that the witches’ prophecy is his last chance to get what he deserves. King of Scotland. Washington’s portrayal of Shakespeare in the black-and-white version earned him an Oscar nomination for lead actor. It also received nominations in cinematography, production design, and editing. Frances McDormand stars as Frances McDormand.
ON DISNEY+
Encanto – There is something special about this Disney animated film. It’s the music, rather than the animation that has captivated many. The film’s soundtrack was the first to hit No. 1 since 2019. The soundtrack reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Its most-popular song, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” was the highest-charting Disney animated song in over 26 years. It ranked higher than “Let It Go” and Lin-Manuel Miranda. It’s a magical story, too. The story features the charming family known as the Madrigals, who live in Encanto, a Colombian mountain hamlet. Miranda was nominated for “Dos Oruguitas” and the other nominations were for original score (Germaine Fran) and best animated feature movie.
“Luca” — This Disney/Pixar story about a young boy’s summer in the Italian Riviera is up for consideration as the best animated feature. Jacob Tremblay voices Luca. Jack Dylan Grazer voices Alberto. The two have a lot of fun at the seaside, but they also share a dark secret. Enrico Casarosa directs.
Raya and the Last Dragon — Another film competing for the award for best animated feature. You can take a trip to Kumandra where an evil force decimated the harmony between dragons and humans 500 years ago. To save humanity, the dragons gave their lives. Raya, a warrior, finds a legendary dragon to restore order.
ONLY IN THEATERS
Some Oscar nominees will only be appearing in theaters for the time being.
These include the 1970s-set Licorice Pizza with three nominations for best picture, director (Paul Thomas Anderson), and original screenplay. It’s set in sunny Southern California and is a charmingly loose tribute to Anderson’s youth, the San Fernando Valley.
“Drive My Car” by Ryusuke Hayaguchi, a Japanese director. It is a drama that runs three hours and has four Oscar nominations including best picture, best director, and best adapted screenplay. This adaptation was taken from a Haruki Murakami story. Hidetoshi Naishijima plays the role of a widowed actor. Toko Miura, a 20-year-old taciturn girl plays the role of his chauffeur. In the midst of sorrow and loss, a touching friendship is formed.
Steven Spielberg’s reimagining “West Side Story” is still in theaters. However, it will be available to Disney+ subscribers beginning March 2. Seven Oscar nominations were given to his version of the 1961 classic, including best picture and director. Ariana DeBose was also nominated for her Anita. Steven Sondheim, Tony Kushner, and Spielberg delved deep to reexamine the classic Romeo and Juliet story that places the Sharks and Jets front and centre in New York City.
