PATERSON — The state recently suspended a former Paterson teacher’s certificates for three years after he was accused of helping students cheat on tests.

Banmali Banjeree was accused in 2014 of giving students answers and tapping on desks to suggest the correct response to their High School Proficiency Assessment tests while teaching at Eastside High’s School of Government and Public Administration.

Paterson Public Schools District reportedly suspended him without pay and filed disciplinary charges against him. Banjeree resigned two months later.

Immediately after the state issued a report on the accusations, though, the district promoted him to a supervisor position where he reportedly made $87,601.

He is also listed as teaching at Rutgers University-Newark in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

Banjeree denied to the state helping students with their tests and said he only offered them words of encouragement.
