A pastor at a small Baptist church near Hillsboro was arrested Monday for allegedly engaging in sexual conduct with a child, according to media reports and a news release.

The Rev. Benjamin William Nelson, 28, was charged with two felony counts of sexual assault of a child and one Class A misdemeanor charge of deadly conduct, a news release said.

Fox 4 News reports a mother told police she saw Rev. Nelson in a car with her minor daughter Sunday night in a Whitney-area shopping center.

His deadly conduct charge is for driving recklessly near the girl’s mother when leaving the scene of the alleged crime, the television station reported.

A police news release said Rev. Nelson was arrested without incident Monday at his Waco home. He was transported to the Hill County Jail for booking.

Nelson, who is married, is listed as a reverend at Peoria Baptist Church. He studied at the University of Texas at Austin and Baylor University. He started preaching at the church in August, according to the church’s website.

Phone calls to the church for comment were not immediately returned.

The Fox news station reports Nelson was studying at a seminary in Waco.

The police department is asking for other witnesses or possible victims to notify them of any other information in this case by contacting them at 254-694-2638.
