WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump will deliver his first speech before a joint session of Congress tonight at 9 p.m.

White House officials have said the chief executive will focus on the campaign promises he’s already fulfilled and lay out an “optimistic vision” for the nation’s future that will cross traditional political lines, such as race and socioeconomic status.

The speech theme will be “Renewal of the American Spirit,” says White House spokesman Sean Spicer.

Spicer says Trump will discuss reforming taxes and regulations, improving the workplace for working parents, increasing military spending, and repealing and replacing Obamacare.

“You can expect a speech grounded firmly in solving real problems for every American,” Spicer told reporters. “How can we get kids who are trapped in failing schools into better ones? How we can keep gangs and drug violence out of our neighborhoods and communities. The president will address the Americans who have been waiting for help from their leaders for too long and let them know that help is finally on the way.”

Opponents like House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi predict the speech will more likely show how Trump will dismantle progress made by his predecessor.

“President Trump’s reckless agenda and incompetent judgment is jeopardizing the security of our nation,” she said in remarks before Trump’s speech. “As long as Republicans continue down this destructive and radical path, the public resistance will only increase.”
