NEWTON — A 20-year-old Lodi man was sentenced Friday to five years probation for causing a head-on crash on Route 15 this past July in which a pregnant woman was injured, the New Jersey Herald reported.

Joshua Buttacavole pleaded guilty on Jan. 9 to fourth-degree assault by auto, fourth-degree providing false statements, a disorderly persons offense of assault by auto, reckless driving and unsafe lane change, the newspaper reported.

Police said Buttacavole was driving substantially over the speed limit on July 19 when he drove his Chevrolet Trailblazer into the shoulder from the right northbound lane to pass another vehicle, and then lost control when he re-entered the right lane.

The Trailblazer then overturned onto the grass median before hitting the woman’s Jeep Liberty on the southbound side of Route 15.

Buttacavole’s passenger — Nicholas M. Baya, 20, of Lodi — was previously sentenced to one year probation for hindering, according to New Jersey Herald.

The woman suffered broken bones and lacerations in the crash, but the collision did not interfere with her pregnancy, police have said.
