In the Kherson war ‘theater’ (in southern Ukraine), well known to journalists following the Russian invasion, a drone attack has killed the Ukrainian journalist, Bogdan Bitik, and injured the Italian journalist and special envoy of the newspaper La Repubblica, Corrado Zunino. According to the newspaper, it was an ambush by Russian snipers at the gates of Kherson.
Zunino has recounted how the attack was during a telephone conversation published by the newspaper for which he works: “They reached us, I saw Bogdan on the ground, he did not move, I dragged myself out of the line of fire. I ran until I hit a car civilian. I was covered in blood, they took me to the hospital in Kherson. I tried to call Bogdan several times, he didn’t answer. He was a great friend of mine, it’s atrocious suffering.”
The journalist, who was injured in the back, is in the hospital and his condition is not serious. The Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, has confirmed through his Twitter profile that Zunino “is well and is being attended by our Embassy in kyiv.” “I’m fine, I have four wounds, three are from a fall while fleeing, one, the shoulder, was from a bullet. He was wearing a bulletproof vest. Probably the shot that wounded me too and killed Bogdan through his chest,” he explained. Zunino.
Kherson, was occupied by the Russians from the first days of the conflict and liberated on November 11 by the Ukrainians and since then, however, the Russians have settled on the other side of the Dnipro, the great river that borders the eastern districts of the city before flowing into the estuary towards the Black Sea. Their shelling raids have emptied the city and raids have increased in recent days, with talk of Ukrainian commandos stationed on swampy islets off the east coast.
Tajani also stressed: “I am together with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, who has ensured the full cooperation of the Ukrainian authorities.” Kuleba, visiting Rome today, is part of the Ukrainian delegation at the bilateral meeting on the reconstruction of Ukraine organized by the Italian Executive and in which companies from strategic sectors of both states have participated.
